The Us Department of Justice Has Officially Sued Volkswagen for Tailpipe Cheating

The US Department of Justice and the US Environmental Protection Agency have officially filed a civil lawsuit against Volkswagen Group, accusing it of fraud and violating the US Clean Air Act by selling diesel powered vehicle exhaust emission detection software in the United States.

The Ministry of Justice stated in the lawsuit that since 2009, Volkswagen Group has installed illegal cheating software in nearly 600000 diesel powered vehicles it produces, falsifying exhaust tests. The involved car models include not only Volkswagen, but also some of its Porsche and Audi models. Last September, Volkswagen admitted to installing cheating software and falsifying exhaust tests on 11 million diesel vehicles worldwide.

The Ministry of Justice did not specify the exact amount of fines, but according to the Clean Air Act, the maximum fine for each involved vehicle is $37500, and Volkswagen faces a total fine of up to or exceeding $19 billion. Officials from the US Department of Justice stated that this lawsuit represents the first step in taking legal action against the public and does not rule out the possibility of criminal charges. On that day, officials from the US Environmental Protection Agency stated that in addition to filing a lawsuit, the agency is in talks with the public regarding a recall, but so far no suitable plan has been reached.
