Bipolar Membrane Electrodialysis

Bipolar Membrane Electrodialysis

A bipolar membrane is a special type of ion exchange membrane, usually composed of a cation exchange layer (N-type membrane), a middle interfacial hydrophilic layer (catalytic layer), and an anion exchange layer (P-type membrane). Under the action of a direct current electric field, the middle interfacial layer of the bipolar membrane can dissociate water, producing hydrogen ions (H+) and hydroxide ions (OH-) on both sides of the membrane. This unique water dissociation behavior allows the bipolar membrane to convert salts in an aqueous solution into corresponding acids and bases without introducing new components, a process called bipolar membrane electrodialysis.

Product Advantages

  • Simple process, products are only acid and alkali, no by-products are produced.

  • High product quality, low impurity ion content, beneficial for subsequent reuse or refining of battery-grade products.

  • Low electricity consumption per ton of alkali, both acid and alkali can be reused in production, good economic efficiency.

Application Range

  • Environmental protection: Bipolar membrane electrodialysis water dissociation, as a novel membrane separation process, can convert salts in aqueous solutions into corresponding acids and bases without introducing new components, providing a new way to reduce waste discharge and eliminate environmental pollution.

  • Organic acid production: The production of organic acids requires the conversion of organic acid salts into organic acids. Traditional methods use ion exchange, and the regeneration process of the ion exchange column consumes a large amount of acid and produces a large amount of saline wastewater. Using bipolar membrane electrodialysis hydrolysis to supply H+ and OH- can directly produce organic acids without the need for added acid, and it produces alkali as a byproduct. This simplifies the process and avoids environmental pollution.

  • Food and pharmaceutical industries: The acid and alkali produced by bipolar membrane electrodialysis hydrolysis are used for online pH adjustment in the production processes of the food and pharmaceutical industries. No additional acids or alkalis are needed, and no foreign components are introduced.
