Treatment Process of Toluene Waste Gas in Petrochemical Industry

In the process of petroleum refining, crude oil must go through a series of processing steps to obtain various useful petroleum products.


Petrochemical enterprises are one of the main anthropogenic sources of VOCs emissions, mainly from unorganized emissions such as leakage of petrochemical equipment and pipe valves, respiration from various storage tanks, exhaust gas from equipment, volatilization of oil products during transportation, and discharge from wastewater treatment systems.


When treating organic gases in petrochemical waste gas treatment, activated carbon is generally used for waste gas treatment. However, after the activated carbon is saturated with adsorption, it is not convenient to replace the activated carbon, which affects the efficiency of waste gas treatment.


Therefore, in response to the current problems in the treatment of waste gas in the petrochemical industry, Haipu has developed HDV type polymer nano adsorbents, which can remove hydrocarbons, benzene, ketones, ethers, esters, alcohols, and phenols from waste gas. After adsorption saturation, steam is used to desorb and regenerate the nano adsorbents, and this organic component can be condensed and recovered.


This process not only effectively avoids the problems of high operation and maintenance costs and difficult management, but also has fewer limitations on the technical applicability of materials compared to traditional materials. The relevant characteristics are as follows:

Structural characteristics: Formed by polymerization and activation of different organic monomers, it has a large specific surface area, uniform and controllable pore size, and strong selectivity.

Adsorption effect: After multiple on-site verifications, the exhaust gas adsorption treatment can stably meet the emission standards within the effective duration.

Reproducibility: Stable regeneration performance, can be reused repeatedly, and stable adsorption treatment performance.

Service life: No need for overall replacement, annual replenishment ≤ 5%, surface hydrophobic, stable adsorption performance; Good mechanical strength, no hole collapse, no powdering, high temperature resistance, long service life.


For example, the toluene waste gas generated by a petrochemical company in Beijing is 3000mg/m³. After multiple comparisons and investigations, Haipu technology was selected. After our special adsorption process, the toluene content was reduced to 5mg/m³, and about 50 tons of toluene were recovered annually. The effect is significant and stable.


The company will gradually adopt our adsorption technology instead of the original activated carbon fiber technology for the treatment of nearly 20 other VOCs in the future.
