Chemical precipitation method is the process of adding chemicals such as calcium salts to form fluoride precipitates, or fluoride is adsorbed onto the formed precipitates and co precipitated. This method is simple, easy to handle, and cost-effective, but the solubility of lime is low and can only be added as an emulsion, which cannot be fully utilized, resulting in a large amount of usage. The fluoride content in the treated wastewater can generally only be reduced to 15mg/L, making it difficult to meet the national standard level one. Moreover, there are drawbacks such as slow sedimentation of sludge, difficulty in dewatering, long processing cycle for high flow discharge, and unsuitability for continuous treatment and discharge.

Adsorption method refers to the removal of fluoride from fluorine-containing wastewater through a contact bed by ion exchange or chemical reaction with the solid medium in the bed. This method is only applicable to low concentration fluorine-containing wastewater or wastewater with fluoride concentration reduced to 10-20mg/L after treatment by other methods. Moreover, the regeneration of the contact bed and the treatment of high concentration regeneration solution are indispensable parts of the entire operation process, and frequent regeneration of the contact bed results in higher operating costs.

In addition, there are methods such as freezing, ion exchange resin defluorination, ultrafiltration defluorination, and electrodialysis, but due to high treatment costs and low defluorination efficiency, they are still mostly in the experimental stage and rarely promoted for industrial fluorine-containing wastewater treatment.
