Haipu Science Popularization: Several Methods for Treating Glyphosate Wastewater

If the treatment of glyphosate wastewater is not done well, the pollution caused by glyphosate wastewater is still very serious. Glyphosate is an efficient, low toxic, broad-spectrum, and safe foliar spraying herbicide with internal absorption and non selective foliar spraying, which is widely used worldwide. The extensive use of Caoganlin wastewater and its residues can cause varying degrees of pollution to water sources, soil, air, and ecosystems. Before 2010, China basically used the method of concentrating dilute mother liquor and then adding glyphosate solid and additives to prepare a 10% glyphosate water solution for sale. This resulted in a large amount of sodium chloride and sodium hypophosphite entering the soil, causing soil compaction and salinization; At the same time, a large amount of organic compounds such as formaldehyde, glyphosate, methyl glyphosate, amino methyl phosphate, and hydroxymethyl phosphate enter the water body, seriously polluting the water environment. In 2009, the Ministry of Agriculture and the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology clarified that the production of 10% glyphosate solution would be stopped at the end of 2009, and its sales and use would be stopped at the end of 2011. The treatment of glyphosate mother liquor wastewater urgently needs to be addressed. How to treat glyphosate wastewater? The current common methods for treating glyphosate in China are:

1. Fenton oxidation method: The Fenton oxidation method is an oxidation system composed of H2O2 and Fe2+catalyst added to wastewater. It can generate highly oxidizing hydroxyl radicals, which can react with recalcitrant organic matter in aqueous solution to form organic radicals and disrupt their structure. This oxidation decomposition can effectively remove recalcitrant organic matter that cannot be removed by traditional wastewater treatment techniques.

2. Photocatalytic oxidation method: a reaction process in which organic pollutants are oxidized and degraded under visible light or ultraviolet light. However, due to the limitations of reaction conditions, photochemical oxidation degradation is often not thorough enough, and various aromatic organic intermediates are easily produced, which becomes a problem that needs to be overcome in photochemical oxidation. By combining with photocatalytic oxidants, the efficiency of photochemical oxidation can be greatly improved.

3. Membrane separation technology: a technology that selectively separates compounds based on their molecular weight. Through membrane selective separation, the separation, purification, and concentration of large and small molecules can be achieved. The difference from filtration is that membranes can separate within the molecular range, and the membrane separation process is a physical process without phase change or chemical reaction. It has a wide range of applications in the separation of large organic molecules from inorganic ions and small molecular substances such as water.

4. Adsorption method: Adsorption method refers to the use of the special adsorption function of adsorption materials to adsorb and recover specific pollutants in wastewater, thereby reducing the concentration of pollutants in wastewater. After adsorption saturation, the adsorbent material is desorbed using a desorption agent to regenerate the adsorbent material, which can be reused.

Adsorption method is a very simple and direct wastewater treatment technology that can separate and concentrate glyphosate in glyphosate wastewater, achieving the goal of resource recovery.

Adsorption method is currently a popular method for treating glyphosate wastewater. You can search online for companies that have consulted on glyphosate wastewater treatment projects. Jiangsu Haipu Company, which I know, is good. Their company has a lot of experience in glyphosate wastewater treatment, especially in the adsorption process, which can recycle glyphosate mother liquor as a resource.
